excerpts from CALSTART release February 8, 1999 The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) today received CALSTART's top "Blue Sky Award" - recognition presented each year for outstanding contributions to advanced, sustainable transportation that clean the air, improve energy efficiency and help reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. The USPS operates a fleet of more than 7,500 vehicles powered by cleaner-burning natural gas - the largest alternative-fuel vehicle fleet in the nation. Others receiving "Blue Sky Merit Awards" include: Alan Cocconi of AC Propulsion for his electric drive-system alliance with Volkswagen AG (News Notes 10/5/98); Paul MacCready of AeroVironment for his ground-breaking work on electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid-electric vehicles, fast-chargers and solar vehicles and aircraft; the Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District for operating the world's largest electric bus fleet; Gary Starr of ZAP Power Systems for putting more than 20,000 EVs - primarily electric bikes - on the road; and Arizona educator Joan Kiteley for her innovative efforts that helped fund clean-fuel bus purchases. Previous awardees include General Motors, Toyota, Ballard Power Systems and others. Alan Cocconi of AC Propulsion was selected as a Blue Sky Merit Award recipient because of the important, industry-spanning alliance he recently forged with Volkswagen AG - and the resulting multi-year, EV development program which emerged. His continuous innovation in the field of zero emission vehicle solutions has marked many projects currently produced by other manufacturers. His company currently manufactures electronics, motors and instrumentation systems for electric and hybrid-electric vehicles. He has worked extensively on solar-powered vehicles, and holds numerous patents concerning electric vehicle drive system and recharge electronics. |
